So, what seems like years ago at this point (6 months, actual time) SCG contacted me about doing a series of sleeves for their player’s club. I was pretty excited about the opportunity, but more so when I found out the theme: tribal. Now, I actually could care less about tribal themes in Magic, but as far as fun things to draw, this is near the top.
The first thing that had to be done was decide what the 8 tribes would be. The decision made was:
A pretty fun and diverse selection of things for me to draw! Let’s check out my first sketches:
So obviously some things worked, and some did not. The 2 hardest things to get right were the squirrel and the Merfolk. The squirrel needed to be goofy but not stupid, and cartoony, but not too cartoony. As a cartoonist, that’s a weird space to be. The Merfolk was hard, because there are about a million ways to make him look like he’s swimming, but that is not necessarily the most dynamic or cool thing he could be doing. Once I had the basic ideas down, and they had been approved I got to work.
But, first things first, hilarious photo ref!
After our mini cosplay-athon, I finally had the poses I wanted!
So after some back and forth, and some helpful critiques, here are the final pieces you will see on the products:
So there they are! And here is how they will appear to you at the events:
As a cartoonist with a pretty different style then what appears on Magic cards, it was really a blast to get to do these! Looking back on work I did 6 monthes ago is a little hard, but overall I think most of them are pretty good! Hopefully you guys like them!
At the last second the original Faerie art was scrapped, and I made the one you see now. Here is the original:
And just because I love these 2, here is the Elf and the Dragon without backgrounds:
I just got my sleeves and boxes in the mail today! Check it:
They turned out pretty well in print. Except, the Angel…something is just weird about it. Kind of blurry? Gobos look really nice!
