Now you can finally see how your monsters stack up!
One day I thought what does every creature look like that has a p/t that matches it’s CMC? And what is the actual scale of these guys? So I set out to find all the creatures that matched this criteria. Obviously 1/1’s for 1 and the lower end of the spectrum are no problem. Once you start getting higher your options get smaller. The few concessions are as follows:
Devouring Strossus is a 9/9 for 8. The other options were Colossus of Sardia, and Demon of Death’s Gate. The Colossus is kind of a mushy mess that isn’t very recognizable. And, the Demon is kind of boring when compared to the amazing D. Alexander Gregory art of the Strossus.
There is no 14/14 in Magic, let alone one that costs 14. The closest thing is Autochthon Wurm which is a 9/14, so instead of trying too hard to make that fit, I skipped it.
Marit Lage IS a 20/20, but his/her CMC is clearly not 20. Oh, well.
So, for the most part it’s pretty interesting to see all these guys in scale. Also some of the choices I made I made simply because I thought things looked cool, or I wanted to draw them.
As far as 1/1’s for 1 go I have about a million choices. For a brief time I thought I would go with Llanowar elves, but who knows what they actually look like? They don’t have full body art. Plus, let’s face it, I LOVE Icatian Javelineers. It is easily one of the coolest, weirdest, and most iconic pieces in Magic history.
Also, I know that Kozilek could have been a few other weirdos, but again, I really wanted to draw him. He’s super weird, and has eyeballs on his arms, c’mon!
I guess the other big weirdo is Brion. He could have been plenty of things, mostly green. But, drawing a giant homelss man is too good to pass up.
I hope you enjoy it!
